PETALING JAYA: The country’s premier cycling race, Le Tour de Langkawi (LTdL), will organise a series of races for boys aged below 15 as a platform to unearth more road cycling talent.
The Road to LTdL Under-15 Race will be incorporated as an event in the SapuraKencana-SIC Sepang Criterium series, starting with the third round on Nov 10 at the Sepang International Circuit (SIC).
LTdL chief operating officer Emir Abdul Jalal said that besides adding excitement to the series, it’s also a way to promote grassroots development.
“As the country’s biggest cycling event, the LTdL also has a responsibility towards the development of the sport and what better way than to support our youngsters at the grassroots level,” said Emir.
The criterium series, sanctioned by the Malaysian National Cycling Federation (MNCF), will hold its second round on Sunday. The final round will be hosted on Dec 8.
Event secretary Musairi Musa said the idea was proposed to the LTdL organisers after receiving positive response from a survey conducted recently for an Under-15 race.
“We have invited those in the age group to come and participate for free as a test run in the second round this weekend ... and response has been encouraging, with close to 30 riders having registered.
“This just goes to show that much more can be done out there, in terms of development, for the future of cycling,” said Musairi.
The organisers are still hoping for more girls to step up to the plate.
