GLASGOW: Malaysia finished empty-handed in boxing for the third consecutive Commonwealth Games since the 2006 Melbourne Games.
The national team sent five boxers to the Glasgow Games and all proved to be flops.
Malaysia’s best bet for a medal – Mohd Fuad Redzuan – lost 3-0 to Ashley Williams of Wales in the quarter-finals of the men’s light flyweight (46-49kg) category on Wednesday.
Khir Akyazlan Azmi also crashed out in the quarter-final of the men’s light welterweight (64kg) category on Tuesday, going down 3-0 to Northern Ireland’s Sean Duffy.
Three other Malaysians failed to get past their opening bouts.
Mohd Alnazirul Othman lost to Nick Cooney of Australia 3-0 in the men’s lightweight (60kg) while S. Jaya Rahman went down to Kauko Junior of Papua New Guinea 3-0 in the men’s flyweight (52kg). Both lost in the first round.
Mirage Khan was knocked out by New Zealand’s David Light in the second round of the men’s heavyweight (91kg) category.
No wonder the National Sports Council (NSC) did not set any medal targets for the team.
Malaysia last won a gold through Sapok Biki (light flyweight – 49kg) at the 1998 Kuala Lumpur Games.
Since then, only Mohd Zamzai Azizi has won a medal for Malaysia – a bronze at the 2002 Manchester Games.
