Boxing: Khir and Fuad storm into quarters (updated)

GLASGOW: Malaysia have two boxers – Khir Akyazlan Azmi and Mohd Fuad Redzuan – in the quarter-finals.

Khir won his bout in the men’s light welterweight (64kg) category after defeating Ploutarchos Parris of Cyprus 3-0 on Sunday while Fuad made short work of Mohi Bullah of Pakistan 3-0 in the men’s flyweight (46-49kg) category on Monday.

Khir is scheduled to fight Sean Duffy of Northern Ireland on Tuesday. Khir had earlier defeated Papua New Guinea’s Eko Noel 3-0 in the opening bout.

Fuad will face the winner between Juliano Maquina of Mozambique and Ashley Williams of Wales in the other quarter-final bout.

However, it was end of the road for three other Malaysians boxers, who were eliminated in the preliminary rounds.

They are Mohd Alnazirul Othman who lost to Nick Cooney of Australia 3-0 in the men’s light weight (60kg) while S. Jaya Rahman lost to Kauko Junior of Papua New Guinea (3-0) in the men’s fly weight (52kg). In the men’s heavy weight (91kg) Malaysia’s Mirage Khan was knocked-out by David Light of New Zealand in the second round.

Malaysia returned home empty handed at the New Delhi Games in 2010. The National Sports Council (NSC) have not projected any medals from the boxing team.

Malaysia last won a gold through Sapok Biki (light fly weight – 49kg) at the 1998 Kuala Lumpur Commonwealth Games. Since then, Mohd Zamzai Azizi last won a bronze at the 2002 Manchester Games.
