GLASGOW: The national boxing team had a scare when their luggage went missing at the Glasgow Airport on Saturday.
The National Sports Council (NSC) official, who were on hand to receive the team, said that only one of the seven bags was found upon their arrival from Heathrow. However, after nearly two hours all their luggage were found and the five-man team, led by coach Azmi Yunus, were relieved.
“We have completed with success our two weeks of centralised training in the Philippines. It was a good workout for the team and we are ready to contribute to the medal tally this time,” said Azmi of the Malaysian boxers who returned home empty handed at the New Delhi Games in 2010.
He said the NSC have not projected any medals from the team but he is confident his men will strike gold since they last won through Sapok Biki (light flyweight - 49kg) at the 1998 Kuala Lumpur Commonwealth Games. Since then, Mohd Zamzai Azizi last won a bronze at the 2002 Manchester Games.
“We have a mixture of new and senior fighters. We expect to deliver from the lower weight categories,” said Azmi.
One of the strong medal prospects is Mohd Fuad Redzuan in the 49kg. He exited in the quarter-finals at the last Games in New Delhi.
“I am a more matured boxer now and have been in competition regularly. The fighters from Ireland and India will be my main competitors,” said Fuad.
The other two medal prospects are seasoned campaigners Khir Akyazlan Azmi (64kg) and Mirage Khan (91kg).
Mirage of Pakistani and Malaysian parentage is well equipped with more than 10 years of experience in combat sports.
The former wushu exponent in sanshou (Chinese boxing) is also a top fighter in Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) and kick-boxing.
“This is my first real boxing competition in the Commonwealth Games,” said Mirage.
The other two boxers are rookies Jaya Rahman (52kg) and Mohd Alnazirul Othman (60kg).
