Victoria comes of age with HK Open win

PETALING JAYA: National back-up bowler Victoria Chin snatched her first international Open victory when she won the Hong Kong Open title at the South China Athletic Association bowling centre.

The 18-year-old, who is the top seed in the step-ladder final after finishing the Masters stage two on 2,080 pins, defeated Sharon Limansantoso of Indonesia 213-209 for the title.

Victoria, whose last international victory was the Milo International Junior All-Stars girls’ Open title in December last year, had a nervous moment in the final when she had a split in the fifth frame, resulting with an open frame.

“It was a bad patch for me. But I just told myself to forget about it and concentrate on making good shots,” said Victoria.

“As the top seed, I have to wait for quite sometime for my match and it was nerve wrecking watching the others play. I’m so glad that I got this one in the bag.”

The win was important for Victoria, as it bode well for her selection for the World Youth Championships at the same venue in August.

“It feels great to finally win an Open title. I like to thank my coaches Holloway (Cheah) and John (Forst) for their guidance.

Meanwhile, Malaysian men were not in contention for the title as none made it past the Masters stage two. The best finisher was Jonathan Ding Sagan in 11th spot.
