Sarawak bowler Daniel Tan with the Sukma gold he won in the men’s singles competition after knocking down 1,337 pins over six games.
KANGAR: Sarawak's Daniel Tan had his heart in his mouth as he waited to see if anyone would better his score during the Sukma bowling men’s singles competition at the Perlis Bowl.
The 21-year-old from Kuching had knocked down 1,337 pins over six games (average 222.80) during the first squad action, which ended in the early hours of Wednesday morning.
In the second squad action on Wednesday, Daniel’s position at the top of the standings came under threat. With one game to go, Daniel was resigned to losing the gold as Malacca’s Ahmad Aidil Halim and Johor’s Syed Muhammad Hafiz needed to score a minimum 237 and 240 pins respectively to be crowned champion.
However, both failed to overtake Daniel, with Aidil posting a 225 for a 1,321 total to take second spot, while Hafiz settled for the bronze after managing a 214 (total 1,315).
“It was the longest wait in my life. I have never felt this nervous before,” said Daniel, after winning his first Sukma individual bowling medal.
“Several guys in the second squad made an explosive start and after four games, I was resigned to losing my top spot. I am lucky that they dropped their pace in the final two games.”
The win is the national youth bowler’s biggest individual win of his career.
He won the Sukma men’s team gold for Sarawak in Malacca 2010 and a team silver two years ago in Kuantan.
“Before coming to Perlis, I thought I would just give it my best shot because this is my third and final chance to win an individual medal in Sukma.
“Winning the men’s singles gold is a pleasant bonus and I am looking forward to winning as many medals as possible in the remaining events.
“With this win, I hope to catch the eye of the national selectors, who will name the Malaysian squad to the Asian Youth Bowling Championships in Hong Kong (in August) soon. It has always been my dream to represent Malaysia at a major bowling competition.”
