PETALING JAYA: Newly-promoted elite bowler Timmy Tan overcame two dismal games to clinch the men’s singles gold medal for Federal Territory in the Inter-state Championships at the Sunway Mega Lanes in Sunway Pyramid.
The 19-year-old Timmy, who claimed the doubles gold medal last year with Syimir Abdul Razak, captured the only gold medal for Federal Territory on Tuesday after a six-game score of 1,300 pinfalls.
He, however, had to dig himself out of trouble with poor scores of 176 and 188 in the second and third games respectively.
Johor’s Muhd Nur Aiman Khairuddin (1291 pins) took the silver medal and Federal Territory’s Yusuf Abdul Raof (1,280 pins) bagged the bronze.
“I was having difficulty finding my lines in the first half of the competition. I was more comfortable with my lines in the second half ... I’m glad to score big towards the end,” said Timmy, who had lines of 212-176-188-214-265-245.
Meanwhile, national bowling icon Shalin Zulkifli showed that she is still a prominent figure in the sport after claiming the women’s singles title.
Shalin, representing Selangor, knocked down a total of 1,341 pins to overcome team-mate Siti Safiyah Amirah Abdul Rahman (1,277) and Penang’s Esther Cheah (1,233).
It was a sweet comeback for Shalin in the championships as she last competed in it in 2010.
“It was a pleasant surprise actually, but I’m taking this championships seriously because this is an important year due to the Asian Games (in September),” she said.
In the boys’ competition, Al Qayyum Syafiq nailed another gold medal for Selangor by knocking down 1,277 pins to pip Malacca’s Ahmad Aidil Abdul Halim (1,243) and Sarawak’s Mohd Uzair Irsyad Noor (1,239).
In the girls’ event, national youth trainee Siti Aishajan Husin of Sabah beat Penang’s Nur Amirah Auni Azman to the gold medal by 22 pins. Aishajan downed 1,266 pins for the gold medal as Amirah (1244 pins) settled for the silver. Selangor’s Dina Nur Nadia Zainal Abidin took the bronze medal on 1,230.
The competition continues on Wednesday with the doubles event.
