Bowling: Gillian, Ameerul win Masters event at MSSM

PETALING JAYA: Sarawak’s Gillian Lim Siew Geok pulled off a major upset after winning the Masters event of the girls' Under-15 category in the MSSM (national schools) bowling championship.

Gillian chalked up a total of 2,360 pinfalls to qualify for the step-ladder finals ahead of hot favourite Nur Syazwani Sahar of Selangor at the Sunway Mega Lanes in Sunway Pyramid on Thursday.

Syazwani qualified in second with 2,742 pinfalls, while Sabah’s Siti Nur Aisyah Satar rounded up the finalists with 2,371 pinfalls.

Gillian did not squander her golden opportunity by downing Aisyah 214-157 in Game One, before preventing 14-year-old Syazwani of a third gold by beating her 233-200 (Game Two) and 237-231 (Game Three) to take the gold by 470 to 431 pinfalls.

Meanwhile, Tun Ameerul Luqman Al-Hakim of Selangor captured the boys’ Under-15 Masters crown with a total of 2,501 pinfalls.

Negri Sembilan’s Muhd Al Qayyum Shafiq qualified second with 2,589 pinfalls, while Johor’s Muhd Azri Azni (2,571) was third.

In the step-ladder finals, Ameerul overcame Azri 182-142 in Game One before easily disposing of Qayyum, beating him 173-163 (Game Two) and 198-159 (Game Three) for the win 371-322.
