PETALING JAYA: Malaysia have a fighting chance to make the women’s trios semi-finals at the World Bowling Championships in Nevada, the United States.
After the first block of three games at the Strike Zone Bowling Arena on Saturday, Esther Cheah, Shalin Zulkifli and Sin Li Jane racked a total of 1,745 pins to sit in 12th spot. They are 265 pins behind leaders Ryu Seo-yeon, Lee Na-yeon and Son Yun-hee of South Korea.
Li Jane was Malaysia’s best performer with lines of 191-178-173 for a 642 total. As for veteran Shalin, contributed 570 pins while Esther could only collect manage 533 pins.
Malaysia’s second trio of Siti Safiyah Amirah Abdul Rahman, Jacqueline Jenelee Sijore and Zandra Aziela Ibrahim Hakimi knocked down 1,681 pins to be placed 29th.
It was not just the Malaysians who struggled on the short oil pattern. The United States also failed to get their game going. Stefanie Nation and Shannon O’Keefe, the doubles gold medallist, and Shannon Pluhowsky could only manage 1,744 pins for 13th spot.
The other American team of Liz Johnson, Missy Parkin and Kelly Kulick knocked down a 1,719 total to be placed 22nd.
Malaysian team manager Cheah Ban Cheng is confident of a good showing by Li Jane, Esther and Shalin in today’s second block of three games.
“This is just just the halfway point. We still have a chance in the next block to make the semi-finals,” he said.
