KUALA LUMPUR: There was mixed fortunes for national bowler Sin Li Jane in the women’s doubles event in the World Championships at the Strike Zone Bowling Centre in Nevada.
Li Jane put up one of her best performances in her second world meet on Thursday but it just wasn’t good enough for her and partner Esther Cheah to earn a medal – missing out the top four cut by just 10 pins. Li Jane-Esther amassed a combined score of 2,451 pins for sixth spot.
Li Jane blazed the lane with lines of 258-199-237-279-178-254 while Esther managed 258-204-223-209-224-203.
It was at the last minute that two pairs – South Koreans Lee Na-young-Jung Da-wun and Americans Kelly Kulick-Missy Parkin – to pip them to the fifth and fourth place

The Koreans surged ahead by eight pins while the Americans eclipsed them by 10 pins at the last and sixth game.
The other Malaysian pairs fared poorly. Jacqueline Sijore-Zandra Aziela Ibrahim Hakimi finished in the 17th spot while Siti Safiyah Amirah Abdul Rahman-Shalin Zulkifli ended up in 34th position.
Li Jane took the near miss in her stride.
“We came very close to making the elimination round but lost by 10 pins. It’s disappointing but we have to accept it,” said Li Jane, who underperformed in her debut in Hong Kong two years ago. “I’m bowling much better in my second world meet here and I hope to press on with my team-mates.
“The lane is quite challenging but our chief coach Holloway (Cheah) is doing his best to guide and encourage us. It is important for us to remain positive and give it another shot in the trios next.”
After struggling to find their footing in the singles, the women bowlers from the United States struck back to make a 1-2 sweep. Stefanie Nation-Shannon O’Keefe beat compatriots Kulick-Parkin 482-438 in the final.
The men’s and women’s trios events will be held over two days on alternate days. The women’s first squad will start today, followed by the second squad on Monday. The men’s trios opened their campaign on Friday and the second part will be held tomorrow.
