COPENHAGEN: Reigning Commonwealth Games women’s doubles champions Woon Khe Wei-Vivian Hoo showed that they are hungry for more honours.
On Monday, the duo got off to a blistering start in the opening day with a 21-11, 21-12 win over Sarka Krizkova-Katerina Tomalova of Russia.
They will take on Denmark 15th seeds Line Damkjaer Kruse-Marie Roepke in the second round on Wednesday.
Being the first Malaysian pair in action, they did well not to put undue pressure on themselves by keeping it tight and simple.
“It is our first tournament since winning the gold medal at the Glasgow Games. We got off to a slow start but it was not too long before we got our rhythm,” said Vivian. “We kept the momentum going and nothing has changed in the way we played today. It was the same Vivian-Khe Wei from the Commonwealth Games.”
The duo however, knows that they face their biggest challenge against Kruse-Roepke as the Danish pair will get home support.
“We will be up against the players and their fans but we are used to such atmosphere. During matches, we are focused and do not allow outside interference to affect our game,” added Vivian.
Khe Wei added: “This Danish pair are good. They had beaten Lim Yin Loo-Lee Meng Yean during the Uber Cup Finals. We have not played against them but we have analysed their game.
“We have a day’s rest and we will make sure we come prepared for the crunch tie. We’ll be ready.”
Khe Wei-Vivian are hoping to become the second Malaysian pair after Chin Eei Hui-Wong Pei Tty to reach the quarter-finals in the World Championships. Eei Hui-Pei Tty pulled it off at the 2005 edition in Anaheim.
While Khe Wei-Vivian takes a break, the spotlight will be on Ng Hui Lin-Ng Hui Ern, Lee Meng Yean-Lim Yin Loo and Amelia Anscelly-Soong Fie Cho on Tuesday.
Hui Lin-Hui Ern will take on Tosin Damilola Atolagbe-Fatima Azreez of Nigeria; Yin Loo-Meng Yean meet England’s Gabrielle Adcock-Lauren Smith; and Amelia-Fie Cho have a date with Japan’s Misato Aratama-Megumi Tarano.
