KUALA LUMPUR: The men’s doubles shuttlers gearing up for the World Championships in Copenhagen from Aug 25-31 are rather out of focus with all the changes going on in the national team.
But national coach Pang Cheh Chang is confident that he will be able to put the house in order.
He is optimistic that the three pairs – Goh V Shem-Lim Khim Wah, Tan Wee Kiong-Hoon Thien How and Tan Boon Heong-Koo Kien Keat – will be able to give a decent showing in Denmark although they have not been training together regularly.
All three pairs will be dissolved after the World Championships and Cheh Chang will be focusing on V Shem-Wee Kiong, Thien How-Boon Heong, Khim Wah-Ow Yao Han and Teo Ee Yi-Chooi Kah Ming while Teo Kok Siang will be given a new partner.
Cheh Chang said it would be difficult for some of the players to focus on the World Championships with the going-ons in the doubles department.
“I had to make the changes because I need to set a new direction for the doubles players ahead of the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Olympics. The breaking up of these pairs could not be avoided,” said Cheh Chang.
“Some players are worried about their future and some are unhappy with the changes. I have explained to each of them and I can only hope that they understand the situation. It is the best for the team.
“Unfortunately in the midst of all these changes, we have the World Championships. It is something that I have to manage as a coach. The players must accept the changes and move forward.”
On the World Championships, Cheh Chang said: “The race in the men’s doubles event is open. Our three pairs may not be playing together after this, but I believe if they give their best they stand an equal chance as anyone else to enjoy a good outing in Copenhagen.”
Seventh seeds Thien How-Wee Kiong are in the top half of the draw with top seeds Mohd Ahsan-Hendra Setiawan of Indonesia while 10th seeds Kien Keat-Boon Heong and unseeded Khim Wah-V Shem are in the lower half with second seeds Lee Yong-dae-Yoo Yeon-seong of South Korea.
