KUALA LUMPUR: Five national badminton coaches will get their dues for guiding Malaysia to the final of the Thomas Cup.
This was the assurance given by Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) deputy president Datuk Norza Zakaria after the association had held back the incentive given to the coaches.
On July 1, Youth and Sports Minister Khairy Jamaluddin handed over RM16,000 for the five coaches – Rashid Sidek (singles chief coach), Tey Seu Bock (singles), Hendrawan (singles), Pang Cheh Chang (doubles) and Jeremy Gan (mixed doubles).
Each coach was expected to receive RM3,200 each.
Norza, who was with the team in New Delhi, said the money should go to the five coaches as promised.
“I just found out the money has not been given to them. It was promised to them by Khairy and I will make sure that the incentive would be given to them immediately,” said Norza on Tuesday.
“I also found out there were plans to give this incentive at the end of the year and to be shared by other coaches. That is not right.”
In New Delhi, Malaysia defied the odds by beating Indonesia to reach the final in May. They however went down 3-2 to Japan.
The players were rewarded with RM25,000 each from BAM and an additional RM8,000 each from the government.
