GLASGOW: Goh V Shem and Liew Daren have been given additional roles in this year’s Commonwealth Games.
V Shem will play in the mixed doubles for the first time with Lim Yin Loo while Daren has been teamed up with Chan Peng Soon in the men’s doubles.
V Shem will also play in the men’s doubles with Tan Wee Kiong while Daren is the replacement for the injured Lee Chong Wei in the men’s singles.
National singles coach Rashid Sidek said that “we are trying to optimise our chances in all the events”.
Initially, Wei Feng was slated for the men’s doubles but the coaches decided that it was best to let him focus on one event – the men’s singles.
In the mixed team event starting today, top seeds Malaysia will take on Barbados in a Group A tie at the Emirates Arena.
At the last Games in New Delhi in 2010, Malaysia won four gold medals through Chong Wei (men’s singles), Koo Kien Keat-Tan Boon Heong (men’s doubles), Kien Keat-Chin Eei Hui (mixed doubles) and the mixed team event.
