KUALA LUMPUR: Doubles shuttler Goh V Shem will be using the Indonesian Open this week to consolidate his partnership with Lim Khim Wah as part of their preparation for the World Championships.
The Indonesian Open starting on Wednesday is the last tournament that V Shem-Khim Wah will get to play together before they head for the world meet in Copenhagen from Aug 25-31.
In the Japan Open last week, V Shem played with Tan Boon Heong while in the Australian Open next week, he will team up with Tan Wee Kiong.
V Shem also did not get to play with his regular partner Khim Wah in most of the ties in the Thomas Cup Finals last month. He partnered Wee Kiong and they did well to win most of their matches.
V Shem said that he would not allow the distraction of playing with different partners disrupt his preparations with Khim Wah for their first World Championships.
“Honestly, it can be a distraction when one keep changing partners but I am trying to take the positive out of it. One can learn new things from different partnerships,” said V Shem.
“I’ll just stay focused and give my best with whoever that I am fielded with. That is the only way to move forward.
“I am committed to Khim Wah ahead of the World Championships. With him as my partner, I am looking forward to achieving good results.”
In the Indonesian Open, V Shem-Khim Wah have been drawn against seventh seeds and former All-England champions Qiu Zihan-Liu Xiaolong of China.
The others in their quarter are second seeds Mathias Boe-Carsten Mogensen of Denmark and China’s Fu Haifeng-Zhang Nan.
“Khim Wah and I have not set any target as we are concentrating on our opening match against the Chinese. They can pose a challenge and we have to be on our toes to fend them off,” said V Shem.
The other Malaysians in the fray are Boon Heong-Wee Kiong and Hoon Thien How-Ow Yao Han.
Boon Heong-Wee Kiong will take on Thailand’s Maneepong Jongjit-Nipitphon Puangpuapech in the first round while Thien How-Yao Han will play qualifiers.
