PETALING JAYA: Badminton giants China will host the Thomas and Uber Cup Finals for the third time in 2016.
The city of Kunshan, in the Suzhou region, beat off the challenge of Jakarta to host the 2016 tournament.
Kunshan had outlined plans to host the tournament at the Kunshan Sports Centre, which can house more than 5,000 spectators. That was enough for them to pip Jakarta, who had proposed the use of the well-known Istora Senayan Stadium, which can accommodate 6,000 spectators.
Ironically, Jakarta had edged Kunshan for the right to host next year’s World Championships. That decision was made last year.
Despite having won the Thomas Cup nine times and the Uber Cup 13 times, this will only be the third time that China are hosting the prestigious world team tournament. Previously, Guangzhou (2002) and Wuhan (2012) hosted the tournament.
“This is the second time that we have bid for a major badminton event ... and we finally won,” said Kunshan vice-mayor Guan Fengliang in a statement issued by the Badminton World Federation (BWF).
“We will make full use of this opportunity and we will contribute to the promotion of badminton worldwide.”
Meanwhile the World Junior Championships will head to South America for the first time since its inception in 1992, with Lima, the capital of Peru, earning the rights to host the 2015 tournament.
Lima was the only city vying for the world juniors and it was a matter of formality for the BWF to accept the bid.
