NEW DELHI: This may explain why the current batch have been able to shine in the Thomas Cup campaign after failing to do so in 2010 and 2012.
Team manager Datuk Syed Abu Bakar revealed there are no disruptive elements in the team.
Giving his insight into this year’s campaign, compared to the last two in Kuala Lumpur (2010) and Wuhan (2012), Syed said: “I was also the manager of the Thomas and Uber Cup squads in 2010 and 2012.
“Although we had a shorter centralised training duration this time, only about 10 days, there are several areas where we can see improvement.
“Discipline was very good. There were no over-bearing characters in the team.
“There was good camaraderie in the team before we came and also while we are here.
“We sang the national anthem every morning and there were pep talks for the players after training.
“We tried our best to alleviate the pressure. They (the shuttlers) always smiled and joked with their colleagues.
“I was happy to see the good atmosphere. The older players did not try to show their seniority.
“I think these are very important elements that every successful team must have.
“I noticed that there were no arrogant characters present this time.
“Most of them are young and need to be nurtured the right way when it comes to discipline.
“Any big-headed player would be a bad influence and should not be present in the team, no matter how good he is.”
Malaysia were semi-finalists when they hosted the event in 2010 but crashed out at the quarter-final stage in Wuhan two years later. They lost to China on both occasions.
