NEW DELHI: Lee Chong Wei will leave New Delhi with happy memories having also been named the BWF Male Player of the Year for 2013.
The Malaysian world number one withstood competition from China’s Lin Dan and Chen Long; Indonesian doubles duo Mohammad Ahsan-Hendra Setiawan; and Ko Sung-hyun-Lee Yong-dae of South Korea to claim the prestigious honour.
31-year-old Chong Wei won seven BWF World Superseries titles and was runner-up behind Lin Dan in the World Championship men’s singles final in Guangzhou last year.
China’s world number one women’s singles player Li Xuerui captured the Female Player of the Year, proving she is still the one to beat on the big occasion.
Xuerui is the reigning Olympic champion and she retained the women’s singles crown at the World Superseries Final in Kuala Lumpur as well.
She was runner-up to Thailand’s Ratchanok Intanon at the world meet last year but managed to claim the Indonesia Open and the China Open titles.
Xuerui beat Intanon as well as compatriots Wang Yihan and women’s doubles world champions Wang Xiaoli-Yu Yang for the coveted award.
Xuerui led China to a successful defence of the Uber Cup on Saturday, beating Japan 3-1 in the final.
