KUALA LUMPUR: Fans of world number one men’s singles badminton player Lee Chong Wei can now get immediate updates on him.

Chong Wei is embracing social media, and it’s not just the usual sites – Facebook, Twitter and YouTube. He will also be on China’s popular microblogging site Weibo – a wise decision given that he has an army of fans in China, Hong Kong and Taiwan.

Chong Wei has signed up with local PR and talent agency Adam and Eve PR, to handle his official channels of communication.

Speaking about the move on Monday, the shuttler said he recognises that social media is here to stay and that it is the most efficient way to communicate with his fans.

He explained that he will be sharing information, tidbits and updates about his journey as an international badminton player, the people he meets and his love for his family and fans.

”There are many accounts related to me or using my name for promotion. There have been occasions when these sites have gotten me into trouble and they have been an unneccesary distraction when I play in tournaments.”

Fans are encouraged to follow his official accounts as all other accounts that supposedly represent him are fake.

”I owe it to my fans from all over the world ... I never forget their kind support,” said the two-time Olympic silver medallist.

Christopher Tock, digital director of Adam and Eve PR, said he is looking forward to helping Chong Wei in communicating with his loyal fans.

”We will assist him in updating his accounts and communicate with his fans directly in order to help all of us get a better sense of what he goes through in his daily life.

”In fact, we started the FB fan page unofficially on May 8, and to our pleasant surprise it garnered more than 10,000 fans on the first day. Today, that number has doubled. He has 270,000 followers on Twitter, including Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak,” he added.

Fans can follow Chong Wei on Facebook at http://fb.com/leechongweiofficial, Instagram @leechongweiofficial, Twitter @lee_c_wei and Weibo at http://t.qq.com/chongweilee.
