ALOR SETAR: Girls’ doubles pair Goh Yea Ching-Peck Yen Wei continued their impressive form at the World Junior Championships here.
The unseeded pair claimed a big scalp with a spirited display to beat joint-ninth seed Kim Ga-eun-Kim Hyang-im of South Korea in three games on Sunday.
Yea Ching and Yen Wei, both 18, were the early aggressors, winning the first game 21-15 before losing the second 14-21.
However, the duo were in their element in the decider, romping to a 21-8 win.
“I guess, today we really wanted revenge. They beat us in a friendly in Malaysia last year and as we are playing at home again, we wanted a win,” said Yea Ching.
“Playing in the team event helped us adapt to the courts, so we were able to play well. We were able to communicate better on court and our quick and aggressive game got us victory.”
The duo will face Americans Victoria Chen-Crystal Pan in today’s second round. If they get through, a sterner test in the form of joint-third seeds Du Yue-Li Yin Hui of China, awaits.
Indonesia’s Brigita Marcella Rumambi-Fadhila Sugairto also pulled off an upset when they downed joint-ninth seeds Elaine Chua Yi Ling-Yeo Jia Min of Singapore 25-23, 14-21, 21-14.
They join compatriots and joint ninth seeds Rosyita Eka Putri Sari-Apriani Rahayu, who whipped Armenia’s Knarik Margaryan and Lilit Poghosyan 21-3, 21-2 in 14 minutes, in the second round.
The only setback for Malaysia was the exit of Raja Nurnina Raja Azalna Shah-Yap Zheng, who went down to South Korea’s joint ninth-seeds Park Keun-hye-Yoon Min-ah 21-12, 21-17.
Meanwhile, Lee Zii Jia fought tooth and nail in the boys’ singles to pack off Indonesia’s Firman Abdul Kholik 15-21, 21-19, 21-17 in 58 minutes. He faces another Indonesian, Mohammad Bayu Pangisthu, next.
