PETALING JAYA: World No. 1 Lee Chong Wei enjoyed a cruise in the first round of the India Open in New Delhi, where he is seeking his third title of the year.
The 31-year-old Chong Wei, who has already won the Malaysian Open and All-England, barely broke a sweat as he swatted aside unknown Indian shuttler Ajay Kumar 21-9, 21-9 in just 24 minutes.
He will go on to meet another Indian shuttler in the second round – rising star Sourabh Varma, who recently made the final of the Malaysian Open GP Gold.
On Wednesday, Sourabh overcame the towering challenge of Russia’s Vladimir Ivanov, winning 21-16, 17-21, 21-14.
Chong Wei’s path to the final has also been made easier after sixth seed Wang Zhengming of China bit the dust in the first round.
Zhengming who was tipped to meet Chong Wei in the last eight, lost out to home hero P. Kashyap 12-21, 21-17, 12-21.
In the men’s doubles, Tan Boon Heong-Ow Yao Han joined compatriots and fifth seeds Hoon Thien How-Tan Wee Kiong in crashing out in the first round.
Playing in only their second tournament together, Boon Heong-Yao Han showed that they are still very much a work in progress as they easily lost to second seeds Mathias Boe-Carsten Mogensen 17-21, 14-21.
This means Goh V Shem-Lim Khim Wah are the sole survivors through to the second round in the men's doubles. They will meet South Koreans Ko Sung-hyun-Shin Baek-cheol for a place in the quarter-finals.
