India's Sourabh Varma will meet Chong Wei Feng in the Malaysia Open Grand Prix Gold semi-final.
PASIR GUDANG: India's Sourabh Varma will be getting some tips from his younger brother in the hope of spoiling second seed Chong Wei Feng's party in the semi-finals of the Malaysia Open Grand Prix Gold.
The 22-year-old Sourabh made it to the semi-finals after upsetting third seed Chou Tien-chen of Taiwan 22-20, 18-21, 21-15 in an 80-minute energy-sapping match on Friday.
Earlier, Wei Feng had to fend off a strong challenge from R.M.V. Gurusaidutt of India en route to his 21-12, 5-21, 21-19 win to seal a place in the last four.
Sourabh said that his 19-year-old brother Sameer Verma had knocked out Wei Feng in the opening round of the same tournament last year.
“He (Sameer) is not here but I will call him to get some tips on how to beat Wei Feng as I have not played against him before,” said Sourabh.
Sourabh is ranked 43rd in the world but in India, he is currently the national number one based on their ranking tournament.
“My best outing is a final appearance in the India Open GP Gold and hopefully, I can go all the way for a title here,” said the Madhya Pradesh native.
Sourabh knows that at least one person will be thrilled if he wins the Malaysia Open GP gold – his coach P. Gopichand, the former All-England champion.
“We have many singles players in the Indian national team and the competition is keen. A breakthrough here will surely put a smile on our coach's face,” added Sourabh.
Five of his team-mates are ahead of him in the world rankings. They are world No. 22 K. Srikanth, P. Kashyap (24th), Ajay Jayram (27th), Gurusaidutt (30) and Anand Pawar (35th).
