KUALA LUMPUR: Mixed doubles specialist Goh Liu Ying will renew her partnership with Chan Peng Soon for the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow from July 17-Aug 5.
But firstly, they will get acquainted again at the Singapore Open Superseries from April 8-13, after two months of not playing together competitively.
Liu Ying and Peng Soon went their separate ways after reaching the quarter-finals of the Malaysian Open in January following the former’s decision to undergo knee surgery.
In her absence, Peng Soon teamed up with young talent Lai Pei Jing and they put up a creditable showing en route to reaching the final of the Austria Open last month. But they went out in opening rounds of the German Open and All-England this month.
Liu Ying has now decided not to go for surgery yet as she wants a shot at winning a first medal at the Commonwealth Games with Peng Soon.
Liu Ying said that all parties have been informed of the decision.
“The coaches and all the players involved have had a discussion. I will resume my partnership with Peng Soon. I am glad that everyone has been supportive,” said Liu Ying.
Peng Soon-Pei Jing will play together in two more tournaments – the Malaysia Open Grand Prix Gold starting on Wednesday in Johor Baru and the India Open Superseries from April 1-6 in New Delhi.
During that time, Liu Ying will undergo a strengthening programme at the National Sports Institute (NSI).
“I am involved in a new one-month programme right now to strengthen and build my muscles and gauge the impact on my knees. I have put off the plan to go for surgery indefinitely. I’m playing much better right now,” said Liu Ying.
“I am training with different partners every day and, I guess, this change is also good for me. I will come out of this more refreshed.
“The Singapore Open will be the first test for me and Peng Soon and, hopefully, we will be able to pick up from where we left off. If all goes well, Peng Soon and I will be aiming for our first medal at the Glasgow Games.”
Despite missing two months of competition, Peng Soon-Liu Ying only dropped one rung to sixth spot in the world rankings. At the last Commonwealth Games in New Delhi, the duo lost in the bronze medal playoff.
A gold medal is within their reach if they can strike it right again. They have four titles under their belt so far – 2010 Asian Badminton Championships, 2011 German Open, 2012 Japan Open Superseries and 2012 Malaysia Open GP Gold.
