Liu Ying to consult doctors one last time before making decision

Goh Liu Ying will consult the doctors one last time before deciding whether to undergo surgery for her right knee injury.

KUALA LUMPUR: The day that national mixed doubles shuttler Goh Liu Ying has been dreading all along is finally here.

On Thursday, the 24-year-old Liu Ying will consult the doctors one last time before deciding whether to undergo surgery for her right knee injury.

“I will decide after meeting the doctors tomorrow (on Friday at the Damansara Specialist Centre). I know I shouldn’t prolong it any more. It’s time to make a decision,” agreed Liu Ying, who has been in two minds about going under the knife.

All the doctors, including National Sports Institute (NSI) chief executive officer Datuk Dr Ramlan Aziz, have advised her to undergo surgery as it would prevent her injury from getting worse.

But Liu Ying has been hesitant, especially after getting different feedback from former team-mates like Julia Wong and Wong Pei Tty, who had struggled to regain their form after surgeries.

In fact, even team-mate Sonia Cheah is recovering at a slow pace after undergoing surgery.

Liu Ying had sought treatment from a traditional medicine practitioner to fast track her healing process before the Malaysian Open last week.

She competed in the tournament with her knee heavily strapped. However, Liu Yin and her partner Chan Peng Soon lost to Indonesia’s Praveen Jordan-Debby Susanto in the second round.

It was a disappointing outing considering that they had reached the final last year.

If Liu Ying opts for surgery, she’ll probably miss all the major tournaments this year – the Commonwealth Games, World Championships and Asian Games – as it will take her about four to eight months to fully recover.
