Lee Sheng-mu-Tsai Chia-hsin humbled world champions and top seeds Mohd Ahsan-Hendra Setiawan of Indonesia in the second round of the Maybank Malaysian Open. The Taiwanese pair won 21-10, 19-21, 21-13.
BUKIT JALIL: The second round of the Maybank Malaysian Open got off to an unexpected start with two of the top four seeds in the men’s doubles crashing out.
Taiwan’s Lee Sheng-mu-Tsai Chia-hsin were on fire as they doused the challenge of world champions and top seeds Mohd Ahsan-Hendra Setiawan on Thursday.
The world No. 9 got their act right for a 21-10, 19-21, 21-13 win. Sheng-mu-Chia-hsin will go on to face sixth seeds Hiroyuki Endo-Kenichi Hayakawa of Japan, who defeated Dutch duo Koen Ridder-Ruud Bosch, in the quarter-finals.
“We lost to them three times in the past and we told ourselves to just relax and have a go at them,” said Sheng-mu.
“I also think we won because we had better fighting spirit on court. The Indonesian pair did not play their best today and it probably pressure on them,” added Chia-hsin.
Indonesia however did not have the worst day as Angga Pratama-Rian Agung Saputra stunned fourth seeds Liu Xiaolong-Qiu Zihan of China.
The Indonesians, who are ranked 11th in the world, won 21-18, 21-19.
There was also a significant upset in the men’s singles as young Kento Momota came up tops against experienced sixth seed Boonsak Ponsana of Thailand, winning 21-9, 21-13 in 29 minutes.
