PETALING JAYA: Asian Junior champion Soo Teck Zhi bounced back from a disappointing performance in the mixed team event by easing into the third round of the individual event at the World Junior Championships in Bangkok on Wednesday.
Teck Zhi failed to beat Indonesia’s Christie Jonatan in the quarter-finals of the team event as Malaysia lost to Indonesia 3-1.
The top-seeded Teck Zhi, however was in fine form en route to dispatching Mexico’s Luis Garrid 21-11, 21-12 in the second round in just 23 minutes.
The 18-year-old, who received a first-round bye, faces Taiwan’s Yang Sheng-Jie next.
“It was a good match (against Garrid) and I played well,” said Teck Zhi in a text message.
Team-mate Soong Joo Ven also made the third round – but not before struggling to get past Sweden’s Felix Burestedt 22-24, 21-16, 21-17.
“My opponent played really well and was really good at the net.
“I didn’t really play my best today but, in situations like this, I just need to hang on until the end.
“I’m really lucky to win ... this will give me more confidence for my next matches,” said Joo Ven, who faces Germany’s Max Weisskirchen in the third round.
Malaysia’s Lim Chi Wing also progressed after beating Indonesia’s Fikri Ihsandi Hadmadi 21-19, 21-18 but Cheam June Wei was an early casualty, losing 17-21, 15-21 to Indonesia’s Mohd Bayu Pangisthu.
In the girls’ singles, 13-year-old Goh Jin Wei continued to impress as she blew away Australia’s Joy Lai 21-8, 21-9 in the second round.
Her compatriots, S. Kisona and Lee Ying Ying, also sailed into the third round.
Chua Keh Yeap-Muhd Zainuddin, Darren Devadass-Ong Yew Sin and Wei Chua Khek-Woon Mun Choon all made it past the first hurdle in the boys’ doubles, which began on Wednesday.
The mixed doubles also saw Malaysian pairs – Yew Sin-Joyce Wai Chi Choong and Tan Jinn Hwa-Goh Yea Ching – moving into the third round.
