Xuerui, beaten in the final of the World Championships by Thailand’s Ratchanok Intanon, was to meet compatriot and world No. 7 Wang Shixian in the last eight while Xiaoli-Yu Yang were down to face China’s new partnership of Bao Yixin-Tang Jinhua.
Japanese pair Misaki Matsutomo-Ayaka Takahashi were disappointed with the withdrawal of Xiaoli-Yu Yang.
The diminutive world No. 4 pair from Japan had breezed into the semi-finals with a 21-14, 21-14 win over Thailand’s Duanganong Aroonkesorn-Kunchala Voravichitchaikul and were looking forward to pitting themselves against two-time world champions Xiaoli-Yu Yang.
“We have been playing well all week and are pretty comfortable on court. We wanted badly to test ourselves against the top Chinese pair,” said Matsutomo.
“It’s quite disappointing that they’ve pulled out of the tournament.”
Matsutomo-Takahashi, who were ranked as high as No. 2 in the world earlier this year despite never winning any titles, could still benefit from the Chinese pairs withdrawal.
There will be more Japanese interest in women’s doubles after Reika Kakiiwa-Miyuki Maeda overcame South Korea’s Jang Ye-na-Kim So Young 21-11, 15-21, 22-20 in the other quarter-final.
Kakiiwa-Maeda will now face second seeds and home favourites Christinna Pedersen-Kamilla Rytter Juhl for a place in the final.
Pedersen will also have a fight on two fronts after making the semi-finals of the mixed doubles with Joachim Fischer Nielsen.
The fourth seeded Danes saved five match points before prevailing 21-14, 10-21, 30-29 over South Korea’s Ko Sung-hyun-Kim Ha-na.
Nielsen-Pedersen will take on top seeds Zhang Nan-Zhao Yunlei of China in the semi-finals.
In women’s singles, South Korea’s world No. 6 Sung Ji-hyun stunned fourth seed Saina Nehwal of India 13-21, 21-18, 21-19 to set up a semi-final date with Shixian.
