Soong Joo Ven: ' I got a chance to train with Chong Wei and some other top players before they left for the Denmark Open. Now, we are being pushed by the others in the national team. The quality of training is high.'
KUALA LUMPUR: For the last three weeks, top national junior singles player Soong Joo Ven has been brushing shoulders with the seniors.
And the 18-year-old hopes that the high-quality training will stand him in good stead in his final World Junior Championships, which begin in Bangkok on Wednesday.
Joo Ven and Asian junior champion Soo Teck Zhi joined the national team, under the charge of Rashid Sidek, Tey Seu Bock and Hendrawan, three weeks ago and have benefited from training with some of the top players like Lee Chong Wei, Liew Daren and Chong Wei Feng.
“I got a chance to train with Chong Wei and some other top players before they left for the Denmark Open. Now, we are being pushed by the others in the national team. The quality of training is high,” said Joo Ven.
“Hopefully, the solid training will help me put up a strong performance in the world junior meet. This is my last world junior meet and I intend to end my junior career on a high.”
Joo Ven, who crashed out in the third round of the world junior meet in his debut last year in Japan, knows it won’t be easy in Bangkok.
“The boys’ singles competition is quite keen. South Korea have three good singles players and China will be strong as usual. We mustn’t overlook the challenges from Indonesia and hosts Thailand either,” he said.
Before the individual event, Joo Ven will lead the country in the mixed team event.
“We should top our group and probably meet Indonesia in the quarter-finals. We lost to them last year (in quarter-finals) ... hopefully, we can exact revenge,” he said.
Malaysia are in Group X2 with Bulgaria, the Philippines and Scotland.
