Soo Teck Zhi beat Indonesia’s Andrew Susanto 21-16, 21-17 to book his place in Saturday’s semi-finals.
KUALA LUMPUR: Soo Teck Zhi was the sole Malaysian survivor in the boys’ singles at the Malaysian International Youth Under-19 badminton championships at Juara Stadium in Bukit Kiara on Friday.
It was a bad outing for the Malaysians as 12 out of the 15 crashed out of the quarter-finals on Friday.
After a string of losses, it was 18-year-old Teck Zhi who gave the home crowd something to cheer about as he beat Indonesia’s Andrew Susanto 21-16, 21-17 to book his place in Saturday’s semi-finals.
The Asian Junior Champion will now meet South Korea’s Heo Kwang-hee, who downed Malaysia’s Vincent Phuah Cheng Wei 25-27, 21-19, 21-12, in another quarter-final match.
The fourth-seeded Korean was a semi-finalist at the World Junior Championships last year and Teck Zhi knows he will have to be at his very best if he hopes to give the local crowd something to cheer on Sunday.
“I didn’t play well today against Andrew. I just didn’t get my game going. I think I played much better against Sun Feixiang yesterday.
“To be honest, that was not my A-game and if I play like this tomorrow, I’m finished,” said Teck Zhi after the match.
Second seed Soong Joo Ven battled hard before eventually going down to sixth seed Choi Sol-kyu of South Korea 13-21, 23-21, 18-21. Sol-kyu, the defending champion will take on compatriot Jeon Hyuk-jin for a place in Sunday's final.
Besides Teck Zhi, only boys’ doubles pair Darren Isaac Devadass-Ong Yes Sin and girls’ doubles pair Goh Yea Ching-Peck Yen Wei won their respective matches to progress to the last four.
Second seeds Darren-Yew Sin kept to the form book as they easily disposed of Thailand’s Kittiphon Chairojkanjana and Thanadol Jumpanoi 21-5, 21-17 in 21 minutes. The pair will meet fifth seeds Jeon Hyuk-jin-Heo Kwan-hee of Korea in Saturday’s semi-finals.
In the girls’ doubles, fourth seeds Yea Ching-Yen Wei, who beat compatriots Yap Rui Chen and Ho Yen Mei 21-8, 15-21, 21-12 on Friday, will now face top seeds Kim Ji-won and Chae Yoo Jung of South Korea in the semis.
