Sisters Ng Hui Lin (left) and Hui Ern have a chance of avenging their World Championships defeat to Lee So-hee-Shin Seung-chin of South Korea, provided they make it to the semis.
KUALA LUMPUR: Independent shuttlers Ng Hui Lin-Ng Hui Ern kept the flag flying high for Malaysia’s women’s doubles shuttlers when they marched into the quarter-finals of the Taiwan Open Grand Prix Gold on Thursday.
The Britain-based sisters defeated Chen Pai-jou-Huang Mei-ching of Taiwan 21-18, 21-17 in the second round to set up a match against Wang Rong-Zhang Zhibo of Macau in the last eight.
If they win, they will have a good chance of avenging their World Championships loss to second seeds Lee So-hee-Shin Seung-chin of South Korea in the semi-finals.
Last month, the Malaysians lost in an agonising manner to the Koreans in the third round of the World Championships in Guangzhou. They were on the verge of victory at 20-18 in the decider but allowed the 13th-seeded Koreans to claw back for a 21-13, 20-22, 25-23 win.
Malaysia will also have one pair in action in the men’s doubles when Mohd Zakry Abdul Latif-Mohd Fairuzizuan Mohd Tazari made it to the quarter-finals. However, their run could well end on Friday.
The duo, who had a tough match against Lin Chia-yu-Wu Hsiao-lin of Taiwan with a 21-23, 21-16, 21-16 win, will take on World Championships quarter-finalists Lee Sheng-mu-Tsai Chia-hsin of Taiwan next.
If they pull off an upset, they will meet the winner of the match between top seeds Lee Yong-dae-Ko Sung-hyun of South Korea and Fran Kurniawan-Bona Septano of Indonesia.
Malaysia’s challenge has been wiped out in the men’s singles event with the defeat of former world junior champion Zulfadli Zulkifli on Thursday. Zulfadli lost 16-21, 15-21 to World Championships bronze medallist Nguyen Tien Minh of Vietnam in the third round.
