Lin Dan will be playing in the Dutch Open Grand Prix Gold which is on from Oct 8-13. It will be only his third appearance in an international tournament this year.
KUALA LUMPUR: It looks like five-time men’s singles world champion Lin Dan of China will be celebrating his 30th birthday in Holland.
According to www.badzine.net, the organisers of the Dutch Open Grand Prix Gold have announced that Lin Dan will lead a 19-member team for the tournament from Oct 8-13.
The Chinese superstar will turn 30 on Oct 14.
It will be his second appearance in the Dutch Open – after a lapse of 12 years.
It will be Lin Dan’s only third appearance in an international tournament this year.
In April, he conceded a walkover to compatriot Wang Zhengming in the quarter-finals of the Asian Badminton Championships (ABC) and just two weeks ago defeated world No. 1 Lee Chong Wei in the men’s singles final en route to nailing his fifth world title at the World Championships in Guangzhou.
If his determination is anything to go by, Lin Dan should have no problems improving on his current world ranking of 98th. In fact, he should slowly but surely find his way back into the top 10 – or even move back to the No. 1 position.
His three compatriots – Chen Long, Du Pengyu and Zhengming – are in the top 10. Chen Long is in second spot, followed by Pengyu at No. 3 and Zhengming at No. 10.
While China have laid down their plans for their national players, Malaysia are still contemplating whether to send their national players abroad.
The Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) will reveal all when new president Tengku Tan Sri Mahaleel Tengku Ariff chairs the council meeting on Sept 7.
