MIXED doubles shuttler Chan Peng Soon has a score to settle in Guangzhou.
Two years ago, Peng Soon and his partner Goh Liu Ying were sent packing in the first round of the Asian Games at the Tianhe Gymnasium.
And, now, the father of one aims to bury the ghost of his past.
“It’s been two years but I still remember it vividly. It was not a pleasant moment in Guangzhou for us. Hopefully, we can redeem our pride with a better showing this time,” said Peng Soon.
World No. 5 Peng Soon-Liu Ying are aiming to reach their first quarter-finals in four attempts, but it won’t be easy as they have the high-riding Indonesian pair of Ahmad Tantowi-Lilyana Natsir in their path.
“There are a few pairs who are a step ahead of us. We are struggling to beat them,” said Peng Soon.
Those who have been more consistent and outstanding than them are China’s top seeds Xu Chen-Ma Jin and second seeds Zhang Nan-Zhao Yunlei, Denmark’s Joachim Fischer Nielsen-Christinna Pedersen and South Koreans Yoo Yeon-seong-Jang Ye-na.
“We were quite ordinary in the previous world meet but, this time, we are determined to make the top eight and try to beat Tantowi-Lilyana. That is our focus,” said Peng Soon, who has never gone beyond the early rounds in all his three previous world meets.
The other mixed doubles pairs in the team are Ong Jian Guo-Lim Yin Loo and Tan Aik Quan-Lai Pei Jing.
