KUCHING: Universiti Teknologi Mara (UiTM) student Mohamad Arif Zulhilmi hopes to return home with an athletics gold medal from the Myanmar SEA Games.

The 2011-2012 Most Promising Athlete from Sarawak is down for the 400m and 4x400m relay.

Arif is optimistic of putting up a strong performance based on his current form and the intensive training programme he underwent at the Bukit Jalil Sports School (BJSS).

“The challenge will be tough, especially with strong runners from the Philippines, Thailand and Vietnam. But I’m ready for the challenge and will strive hard to win a gold medal for the country,” said Arif, who returned from the Brunei Open Athletics championships in Bandar Seri Begawan last week.

In the Brunei Open, he qualified for the final of the 400m event but had to pull out due to a muscle strain.

“I did not want to take the risk of running in the final (of the Brunei Open) as the SEA Games competition date is close,” said Arif, who trains under coach Mohamad Ali Saruji while the other athletes train under national head coach K. Jayabalan.
