KUALA LUMPUR: A record 45,000 runners have already registered for the Penang Bridge International marathon, which is scheduled for Nov 17.
It is the largest running event ever to be organised in Malaysia.
Last year’s event attracted 37,000 participants.
Danny Law, the chairman of the Penang Tourism Development committee, said that they never expected to receive such an overwhelming response from local and foreign participants.
“We are happy to have a record number of entries for the Penang Bridge International marathon and participants are still registering!
“We expect 50,000 to compete in the run and once we reach that figure we will not accept any more entries,” said Danny, who thanked Asics for being the official apparel sponsor for the second consecutive year.
“We are grateful that Asics is continuing to provide us with apparel this year to make the run the best event in the country,” said Danny.
Asics will provide participants with sporting apparel fit for Malaysia’s humid weather.
The total sponsorship from Asics includes running vests, 20% discount vouchers and goodie bags for participants.
Besides the full marathon (42.2km), the other events are the half marathon (21km), 10km and 5km fun run.
Leading up to the marathon, a series of running clinics will also be held - at Taman Bukit Jalil, Kuala Lumpur, on Sept 22 from 7.30-11am and Oct 13 from 7.30-11am; and the Polo Ground, Ipoh, on Oct 5 from 5-7pm.
