PETALING JAYA: National hurdler Rayzam Shah Wan Sofian again failed to make the cut for the Myanmar SEA Games in December despite facing stiff competition at the World Athletics Championships in Moscow yesterday.
The 25-year-old Rayzam, Malaysia’s only wildcard in the championships, clocked a dismal 14.45 to finish eighth in the men’s 110m hurdles. It was his worst performance of the year. The time was way off his personal best of 13.81 and well outside the Games qualifying mark of 13.86.
The only consolation for Rayzam, the 2007 SEA Games gold medallist, was beating South-East Asian rival Jamras Rittidet of Thailand. Competing in the same heat, Jamras finished last in 14.71.
In May, the Sabahan won the bronze in the third leg of the Asian Grand Prix in Colombo with a season best of 13.96.
Last month, he clocked 14.00 to clinch the gold at the Vietnam Open.
Rayzam now has only one more chance to qualify for the Games – at the Malaysian Open from Oct 19-20.
To date, only 11 athletes have qualified for the Games.
