PETALING JAYA: The National Archery Association of Malaysia (NAAM) are disappointed over the exclusion of their women’s compound and recurve squads from next month’s Incheon Asian Games in South Korea.
Compound archery is making its debut at the Games. Unfortunately, the Olympic Council of Malaysia (OCM) shot down NAAM’s request on Wednesday for their women’s recurve and compound squads to compete at the Asiad.
“We (NAAM) were among those who lobbied strongly for compound to be included in Incheon. Now, we are sending only our men to compete there,” said NAAM executive secretary Ab Karim Zainuddin.
“We are disappointed with the OCM’s decision, but there is nothing we can do about it. It’s a shame because we thought we had a good chance to win medals in the women’s compound events,” he added.
The compound archers, however, showed their worth at the Asiad warm-up event in the second Asian Archery Grand Prix, which ended in Taiwan on Friday.
The men’s compound trio of Muhd Zaki Mahazan, Mohd Juwaidi Mazuki and Lee Kin Lip claimed the bronze with a 29-26 shootout triumph over Taiwan after the third placing playoff match was tied at 225-225.
In the women’s compound event, Saritha Cham Nong, Nurfatehah Fatin Mat Salleh and Norizah Ishak finished a creditable fourth. The trio lost 222-226 to giants South Korea in the semi-finals.
As for the recurve archers, Khairul Anuar Mohamad, Atiq Bazil Bakri and Haziq Kamaruddin failed to impress. They lost to Taiwan in the quarter-finals.
The only saving grace was Khairul’s bronze medal in the individual recurve after he downed Japan’s Hideki Kikuchi 6-0 in the playoff.
