KUALA LUMPUR: National archery coach Lee Jae-hyung is confident of at least two gold medals in the recurve event at the Myanmar SEA Games in December.
He expects the gold medals to come from the men’s team and men’s individual events.
The national men’s team are currently ranked eighth in the world and look to be a shoo-in for the gold medal.
Jae-hyung said he will field world No. 9 Khairul Anuar along with Haziq Kamaruddin, Atiq Bakri and rookie Faris Rosli in the men’s team.
The women archers going to Myanmar are Syafiqah Hashim, Farah Azhar, Sunatra Suchat and Shahira Halim.
None of the archers are above 23 years old and this augurs well for the future of archery in Malaysia.
This has also been a good year for Malaysian archery as the men’s team steadily improved on their performances on the world stage. Khairul even became the first Malaysian to qualify for the World Cup Finals in Paris in September.
“The only disappointment this year came at the World Championships in Turkey earlier this month. The weather was against us as temperatures dropped to 8°C, thus affecting our archers’ performance,” explained Jae-hyung, who has been coaching the national team for 11 years now.
“We are looking to continue our stronghold in the SEA Games as our men archers managed a one-two finish in the last three SEA Games.
“I believe Indonesia and Thailand will be a big threat to us in Myanmar.”
The national archers will be travelling to Taipei for the 18th Asian Archery Championships from Oct 29-Nov 2 and it will serve as a good preparation for the SEA Games.
The archers are targeted to reach the semi-finals in Taipei.
“Winning the championships will definitely be bonus and boost the archers’ confidence heading into the SEA Games. Let’s hope we can make it a back-to-back win to cap off a great year,” Jae-hyung said.
