Khairul Anuar Mohamad … 'the weather is not my main concern'.
KUALA LUMPUR: When things don’t go our way, it’s easy to blame things that we have no control over – say the weather.
But one thing’s for sure, national archer Khairul Anuar Mohamad will not go down that path.
The soft-spoken Terengganu archer, is the first Malaysian to compete in the World Cup Finals and he’s not going to let anything stand in his way in Paris this weekend. Not even the weather.
“We’ve been told that it’s cold in the mornings and warmer in the afternoons. So, it’s not that bad. I think the afternoons will somewhat feel like Kuala Lumpur ... so, I’m not too worried about that,” said Khairul, who leaves for Paris with head coach Lee Jae-hyung on Wednesday night.
As of 11am (Paris time) Wednesday, the weather was reported to be at 17°C and mostly cloudy.
World No. 10 Khairul, who turns 22 on competition day (Sunday), is set to face world No. 5 Lee Seungyun of South Korea in the first quarter-finals of the men’s individual recurve event at noon (6pm Malaysian time).
But Khairul stressed that “the weather is not my main concern” and that he has to be accountable for his own performance.
“I qualified for the Finals as one of the top-eight archers, so I feel really blessed. I will go out there and do my best,” said Khairul.
“As athletes, we have to be accountable. We are the ones competing, so we have to take ownership and responsibility about how we perform and not blame the weather.
“(In Paris) I’m not the only one who will be competing under those conditions. Yes, I don’t live in a country that has four seasons, but that shouldn’t be an excuse or something to be fearful of.
“As I’ve said, I know the mistakes I’ve made and I’m working on rectifying them. I am my biggest obstacle ... so, if I can hold down my nerves, keep my rhythm and shoot well, I know I’ll stand a good chance.”
