Strive to build a strong Asean

JOSHUA Kurlantzick, in an article outlining the many obstacles facing Asean, has stressed the need for this South-East Asian regional grouping to overcome these challenges so that it would not go the way of the European Union.

Like Asean, the EU got off to a good start and developed economically by such strides that it became a powerful economic power next to the United States. Today, the challenges that the EU faces are such that at times it appears to be heading towards a break-up. As such, great care must be taken if Asean is to avoid the dangerous hurdles that lie ahead.
