Give serious thought to wage increase

I REFER to the report “Increase minimum wage to RM 1,500” (The Star, March 2).

The Transport Workers Union secretary-general Tan Sri Zainal Rampak stated that the existing minimum wage of RM900 should be increased to RM1,500. This is good news for employees.

The present RM900 is inadequate considering the high cost of living. Imagine if half of the wages are used for the monthly car payment and the other half to cover the basic necessities, healthcare, children’s education, petrol and etc.

Amid all these challenges, they still carry out their duties. Therefore, the Government must look into this seriously.

This will subsequently assist in reducing corruption and increase workers’ performance.
