S. Korea president says sunken Sewol ferry will be raised

South Korea's President Park Geun-Hye (C) visits Paengmok port on the island of Jindo, near the site of the wreck of the Sewol ferry, on the anniversary of the disaster on April 16, 2015. Park Geun-Hye said that the ferry would be raised, as grief, anger and political tension coloured the first anniversary of South Korea's Sewol ferry disaster, with weeping relatives mourning the 304 dead -- mostly schoolchildren -- and accusing top officials of indifference to the tragedy.- AFP

Seoul (AFP) - South Korean President Park Geun-Hye promised Thursday that the sunken Sewol ferry would be raised "at the earliest possible date" -- acceding to a key demand of the victims' relatives.

"I will take the necessary steps to salvage the ship at the earliest possible date," Park said during a visit to the southern island of Jindo to mark the first anniversary of the Sewol disaster that claimed 304 lives.
