SYDNEY, July 30, 2014 (AFP) - Four Taiwanese men have been arrested and charged over the seizure of crystal methylamphetamine worth Aus$130 million (US$122 million) in Australia, police said Wednesday.
Australian Federal Police said four suitcases holding more than 135 kilos (297 pounds) of the drug known as "ice" were seized at an inner city apartment in Melbourne on Tuesday.
"The estimated street value of the seizure is approximately Aus$130 million," police said in a statement with the Australian Crime Commission.
The four men, who are aged 20, 23, 24 and 29, have been charged with a range of drug-related offences, some of which have a maximum penalty of life imprisonment.
Police said they were still looking into whether the drugs were imported.
"Traditionally with this quantity of ice, you would expect it to come by land or sea," Australian Federal Police commander Bruce Giles said.
Authorities said the group was tracked by an Australian Crime Commission task force which detects illicit money flows.
In a separate case earlier this month, six Taiwanese men were charged with importing 50 kilos of crystal meth into Australia.
