Suspected JI militant held under ISA in Brunei

BANDAR SERI BEGAWAN: The Internal Security Department (ISD) has detained a foreign national who claimed he was a member of Southeast Asian militant group Jemaah Islamiyah (JI).

Daniel @ Awaluddin Sitorus, who was residing in Brunei Darussalam, was arrested on Feb 21 under Section 3(1)(a) of the Internal Security Act for involvement in terrorism-related activities.

A statement from the ISD said its investigations had revealed that the man had undergone military training in Afghanistan in the early 90s and that he had been detained in Indonesia for suspected involvement in a bombing in Medan, Indonesia, in 2000.

Further investigations also showed that he had been in contact with the leader of Mujahedin Indonesia and that he had been involved in facilitating the entry of a suspicious individual into Brunei in early 2013.

Daniel, who has used aliases such as Ustaz Yasin, Abu Yasar, Dani and Dainiardanalin, has been running a herbal business to conceal his identity from the authorities.

The ISD believes that Daniel may have been planning to assist existing members and former members of the terrorist group to come and settle in Brunei, perceived to be a “safe haven”. The ISD also suspects he was hoping to fund terrorist groups outside the country.

The ISD statement went on to say that Daniel’s arrest was a testament to the commitment and dedication of intelligence and enforcement agencies in Brunei, as well as abroad, to combating activities that could jeopardise the safety and security of the public in the Sultanate.

The government of His Majesty the Sultan does not tolerate terrorism-related elements, the ISD said.— The Brunei Times / Asia News Network
