63 foreigners caught in Johor pre-dawn raid

JOHOR BARU: A total of 63 foreigners were picked up in two separate raids in Pasir Gudang at around 2.30am on Tuesday.

In the first raid at a foreign workers’ enclave in Kampung Sungai Rinting, 41 Indonesians were arrested including 19 women, six girls and two boys.

The second raid, which was conducted at the flats in Jalan Gerahu in Taman Rinting, saw 22 Philippine nationals including five women being picked up.

All of those arrested were aged between one and 54 years old and were brought to the Immigration Department office in Setia Tropika.

Some of the foreigners attempted to escape into nearby bushes or hide under beds but were caught by enforcement officers.

When contacted, Johor Immigration Department deputy assistant director Rashidin Rahmat said the raids were conducted while the foreigners were fast asleep.

“They were startled awake by the presence of the enforcement authorities,” he said of the operation which saw the participation of officers from the state Immigration Department, National Registration Department and Civil Defence Department.
