Number of evacuees rises to 608

BALING: The number of flood victims evacuated to relief centres in the district has risen to 608 people from 106 families.

There were 349 evacuees from 87 families on Friday.

Baling Social Welfare Department officer Syamsul Izrin Isahak said the victims were being housed in several community halls.

He said the Rakan Muda Complex sheltered the highest number of victims at 200 people, followed by Kampung Bawah Gunung (100), Baru Bongor Hall (90) Gua Reban Kindergarten (80), Banggol Derum Hall (76), Kampung Lahar Hall (57), and Charok Sikin Hall (five).

The department staff also distributed essential items to the affected victims in the centres such as food, drinks, mats and mattresses.

In Ipoh, 289 people from 89 families, who were victims of floods and a landslide from three villages and a housing estate in the state, are still staying at four flood relief centres.

Perak Fire and Rescue Department (JBPM) director Yahya Madif said 50 people from 17 families from Taman Pulai Raya, Simpang Pulai were placed at the Taman Bersatu Community Hall.

He said 56 people from 17 families from Kampung Simpang Buloh and Kampung Serapoh Akar, Parit were housed at the Kampung Serapoh Community Hall.

Meanwhile, 167 people from 50 families from Kampung Simpang Buloh Akar and Kampong Serapoh, Parit were shifted to the Simpang Tiga Community Hall and 16 landslide victims from five families from Kampung Teluk Yan 2, Pantai Remis were at the Kampung Tebuk Yan 2 Community Hall, he said yesterday.

Yahya said the villages and housing estate were still under 0.5m of flood water due to heavy rains since several days ago.

The agencies involved in helping flood victims were JBPM, Rela, police, Malaysian Civil Defence Department and Social Welfare Department. — Bernama
