KUALA LUMPUR: Only when MCA remains united will the party regain the support of the Chinese community, says party president Datuk Seri Liow Tiong Lai.
"Without internal unity, how are we to regain our strength," he said in his speech at a dinner held in conjunction with the party's annual general meeting on Saturday.
"Tonight is the party's yearly "reunion dinner". No matter what happens outside, this will always be your home," he said.
He urged delegates to enjoy themselves as the "next day" would be crucial to MCA's future.
"In our AGM, we will need to plan on how to get ourselves closer to the Chinese community," Liow said.
He stressed that MCA will need a voice in the Cabinet to ensure that the country does not move towards racial and religious extremism.
"MCA will fight to preserve the diversity and harmony in Malaysia, ensuring the country remains moderate," he said.
Liow revealed that the AGM will also be witnessed by representatives from Chinese government, a first in the party's history.
The dinner was also attended by former party president Tan Sri Dr Chua Soi Lek.
