PETALING JAYA: Detained under the Security Offences (Special Measures) Act (Sosma) 2012, lawyer Matthias Chang pledged to go on a hunger strike in a bid to uphold justice, truth and honour.
In a press statement issued on Thursday hours after his detention at 2pm at the Dang Wangi police station, Chang challenged Umno leaders, including its president Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak, to join him in the hunger strike to demonstrate that they are willing to die for ‘Umno and Malay dignity’.
“Please choose a time and place, preferably Umno headquarters so that we can gather at the lobby and commence our hunger strike to show to the world who has the courage of their convictions.
“Those who give up and stop their hunger strike for whatever reasons shall bow in shame, apologise to the entire country and their community and resign from their public office,” Chang said.
Chang said it is not enough to swear on any holy scriptures to prove one’s innocence because that was easy to do.
“But let’s not just talk, but walk the talk! I dare Umno leaders to accept this simple challenge or forever be cowards and guilty as charged!" he said.
Chang was detained after he visited former Batu Kawan Umno vice-chief Datuk Seri Khairuddin Hassan on Thursday.
It is learnt the Chang was being held under the Security Offences (Special Measures) Act (Sosma) 2012, just like his client Khairuddin.
Chang’s lawyer, Fahmi Moin, said his client was arrested after he visited Khairuddin at 2pm Thursday.
“Investigation is under Section 124(k) and 124(l) of the Penal Code. He is being detained for 24 hours under Sosma.
“After that, it depends on the police whether to release or further detain him for up to 28 days,’’ said Fahmi.
Section 124 is over offences deemed detrimental to parliamentary democracy.
Chang’s arrest came after Khairuddin’s detention under Sosma after he made several reports overseas, including Singapore, Switzerland, France and Hong Kong, against 1Malaysia Development Berhad (1MDB).
