JOHOR BARU:  A nine-year-old pupil died on the spot after he was knocked down by a school van while cycling near his home at Taman Setia Indah here.

Johor Baru South OCPD Asst Comm Sulaiman Salleh said the incident occurred along Jalan Setia 7/11 at 6pm on Friday. The pupil has been identified as Najihussyakir Roslan.

"Najihussyakir was hit by the school van which was sending students of Foon Yew High School home near the Zon Setia 7 neighbourhood.

"The boy, a pupil of SK Taman Daya 3, was staying along Jalan Setia 7/10 near the accident scene," he said in a statement here on Friday.

He said the van hit the victim when he exited from one of the lanes in the neighbourhood.

"He suffered severe head injuries and died on the spot," he said adding the child's body was sent to Hospital Sultan Ismail for a post mortem.

ACP Sulaiman also confirmed that the case is being investigated for reckless driving.
