KOTA KINABALU: The opposition plan for a unity government will result in Umno battling DAP who will be “in real control” of the country, said Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi.
Painting this scenario before Penampang Umno delegates, Dr Ahmad Zahid, who is Umno vice-president, said this happened in Perak when the state was under the Opposition for 11 months after the 2008 general election.
He said although it was led by Datuk Seri Nizar Jamaluddin from PAS, the state was completely under the control of the DAP.
Dr Ahmad Zahid said this situation would arise if the plan to set up a unity government takes shape with 112 seats.
“They will have Umno as Prime Minister but DAP, with the highest number of 38 seats in the Dewan Rakyat, will control the unity government,” he said adding that PAS and PKR will make up the remaining MPs together with alleged defactors from Umno and Barisan Nasional.
“We must not let this happen and I’m sure all Umno and Barisan MPs are firmly with the coalition,” he said at the Penampang Umno delegates meeting.
Dr Ahmad Zahid said the backdoor method of gaining power was illegal as Barisan was a democratically-elected government.
He said the police should carry out indepth investigations into the alleged plot to topple the government.
He said a police report was lodged by an NGO in Tanjung Malim over the plot.
Dr Ahmad Zahid reiterated that there was an intelligence report that the plotters had copies of statutory declarations and a memorandum to be presented to the Yang di-Pertuan Agong.
Meanwhile, the Penampang Umno division, headed by Datuk John Ambrose, endorsed the leadership of Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak and Dr Ahmad Zahid as his deputy, describing them as the “ideal team” for the country.
