Telcos’ cooperation needed to enhance MERS999 for disaster preparedness

CYBERJAYA: The telcos’ cooperation is needed to enhance the effectiveness of the Malaysian Emergency Response Services (MERS999), says Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission chairman Datuk Sri Dr Halim Shafie.

“To be fully effective, MERS999 must be able to locate more accurately the caller to provide immediate help. The issue arises when the data to accurately locate the caller is not made available by the telcos. Currently, the telcos only allow the service to have access to the registered address of the caller, which is often not enough in emergency situations. What we need is the telcos’ network data which can improve the accuracy of the location of the emergency calls. Although a Commission Direction has been issued, not all telcos have agreed to cooperate.
